ARRAN SHORES

From St Georges to Arran Shores

THE STORY

Standing proudly on the Lamlash shoreline, St George’s has been part of Arran’s landscape for well over a century. Its transformation into Arran Shores is the final chapter in a long, winding story of ambition, restoration, and renewal. Planning for the building’s redevelopment began in the early 1990s, when the first proposal aimed to convert the former church into an arts centre. In 1998, St George’s was sold to a private restorer with Outline Planning Permission to create residential dwellings. A detailed consent followed in 2005, granting permission for eight apartments within the church itself and six more in a new extension to the rear.

Yet despite these plans, St George’s sat empty for years. Work started briefly in 2012 with hopes of completion by 2014/15, but the project stalled and the building once again fell silent - a landmark without a future. Everything changed in December 2021, when St George’s found new custodians and a vision worthy of its potential. A full renovation began, respecting the building’s heritage while introducing contemporary design and high-quality local craftsmanship.

In October 2024, the doors finally opened as Arran Shores - a collection of beautifully finished self-catering suites and apartments that blend the character of the original church with a fresh, modern identity. Today, St George’s has been restored not just as a building, but as a place to stay, unwind, and connect with the island. A historic landmark, reinvented for a new generation.
